REQUIRED TEXT NOT INCLUDED
This self-paced, text-based independent study is designed for mental health professionals who have already completed EMDR Basic Training and want to strengthen their foundation and fidelity in the work. The course uses Francine Shapiro’s EMDR Therapy: Basic Principles, Protocols, and Procedures (3rd ed.) as its primary text, offering clinicians the chance to revisit the core of EMDR while sharpening their application with complex clients. Participants will review the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, the eight phases of EMDR therapy, and the standard protocol, while exploring how these apply to challenging clinical presentations. Topics include history-taking, preparation, target selection, desensitization, installation, and strategies for working with blocked processing, high-intensity affect, and cognitive interweaves. The study also highlights treatment fidelity, ethical considerations, and adaptations for diverse populations, including dissociation, complex trauma, grief, and medical conditions.
By engaging with the text in this way, clinicians can refresh their theoretical grounding, refine their understanding of fidelity requirements, and strengthen practical decision-making so EMDR is delivered with both confidence and precision. To receive CE credit, participants must complete the post-test with a passing score and submit the course evaluation.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and how it explains the resolution of unprocessed traumatic memories.
- Re-examine the eight phases of EMDR therapy and how each phase supports fidelity to the standard protocol.
- Reassess criteria for target selection and reflect on the three-pronged protocol more confidently across past, present, and future targets.
- Reflect on strategies for client preparation, management of abreactions, and use of cognitive interweaves when processing becomes blocked.
- Consider adaptations of EMDR protocols for complex presentations such as dissociation, chronic trauma, grief, and medical conditions, while maintaining fidelity.
- Revisit the neurobiological foundations of EMDR and evaluate the role of bilateral stimulation in trauma resolution.
- Reflect on how client readiness, stabilization, and resource development influence treatment pacing and outcomes.
