The Haunted Self: An Independent Study (12 CEs)

REQUIRED TEXT NOT INCLUDED

This self-paced, text-based study is for mental health professionals who want to deepen their understanding of chronic trauma and dissociation. The required text (not included), The Haunted Self: Structural Dissociation and the Treatment of Chronic Traumatization (Van der Hart, Nijenhuis, & Steele, 2006), offers both a clear framework and practical guidance. Participants will explore the differences between PTSD and complex PTSD, how dissociative parts (Apparently Normal Parts and Emotional Parts) develop, and how trauma disrupts the brain, memory, identity, and regulation. The course also reviews the three-phase model of trauma treatment, with attention to what stabilization, processing, and integration look like in real clinical work. This study shows how structural dissociation theory can be applied in EMDR practice, giving therapists practical ways to plan cases, pace interventions, and support safety within all parts of a system. Participants will learn to recognize dissociative presentations that shape case planning, adjust pacing and target selection to match client readiness, and structure EMDR sessions in ways that keep parts safe while working toward integration. The goal of this study is to help clinicians use the lens of structural dissociation to better understand complex trauma and make informed choices in EMDR case planning and treatment. To earn CE credit, participants must complete the post-test in their client portal with a minimum passing score of 80% and submit the course evaluation.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this independent study, participants will be able to:

  • Define structural dissociation and recognize how it shows up through Apparently Normal Parts (ANPs) and Emotional Parts (EPs).
  • Distinguish between PTSD and complex PTSD, and explain how early trauma leads to fragmentation.
  • Describe how trauma affects the brain, memory, identity, and emotional regulation.
  • Outline the three-phase model of trauma treatment and show how it applies when working with dissociation.
  • Use concepts from structural dissociation to guide EMDR case planning, including pacing and target selection.
  • Spot common signs of dissociation in clinical work and apply strategies that build safety and reduce fear between parts.
  • Explain how early attachment trauma shapes identity and describe ways to foster internal collaboration and healing within an EMDR framework.
